I've just finished re-formatting...dual booting linux mandrake 8 & winME....I'm using winME right now because we can't figure out how to run the server off of linux....so, if I run linux, my husband has no internet...any advice?...or rather, he's bored of working on the networking crap & doesn't really care to do it right now...but, if any of you have done this....any advice is welcome...

use an old 386 with FreeSCO download a floppy image, rawrite it to disk and a free functional gateway...viola!!!

Linux is in its element for networking and internet. Apache or Roxen are good web servers.(and FREE!!!)

You could also try coyote linux. It needs a 486 (as does freesco I believe) and you can have it set up before you make the disk, one version comes with a windows disk creator, I have tried both freesco and coyote and like coyote better.

In Mandrake 7.2's GUI configuration utils there was a button for setting up internet sharing and it was mostly automatic just a few questions. I had tried it and it worked great. I haven't tried Mandrake 8 yet but this feature must still be there. Have been using the past couple of distros from SuSE and I have been really happy with it, works better then Mandrake for me.

Another vote for SuSE. While ze programmairs at Mandrake are taking the long lunch with the extra wine course, the vorkers at SuSE are crossink every "t" und dottingk every "i." Then double checking their work!

Which is the way that Linux is supposed to be, dagnabbit. IMnsHO.

Don't bother with a gateway only computer. Just set up Mandrake with iptables or ipchains depending on which kernel version Mandrake 8 has.

I know Mandrake 7.1 has the 2.2 kernel so you would use ipchains, there's a nice walkthrough on the mandrake page.

If Mandrake 8 has the 2.4 kernel then you'll have to use iptables. I'm not sure if there is support for this built in, if you do the setup and it doesn't work then you'll have to recompile your kernel with support for ipmasquerades and iptables. Try this utility:

Or maybe Mandrake has a little button for you to press, I'm not sure.

Mandrake has a little button, I've never used it, though.

I've found Mandrake to be a lot more stable in Gnome compared to when in KDE, especially in the config panels. I would have Suse right now if they had iso's.
